It’s easy to see that one of the most important technological advancements in the filming world over the last 18 months has been the use of Drones. It’s difficult these days to not read a trade magazine or tweet from a production company that does not feature the word Drone somewhere. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or UAV’s have opened up a world of possibilities not just for big budget productions, but the little guy as well. Years ago, it would take a lot of money to rent a helicopter with a stabilised camera to get that sweeping landscape shot from a thousand feet up. Now you can do it at a fraction of the cost.

The fundamentals of what you would have had to hire before are still there of course. You need the camera, a vehicle and a licensed pilot. But costs are reduced greatly. Fuel is replaced by battery life, vehicle size is reduced so you can drive it to your location. But you do still need to have a fully licensed pilot. And that is what Alias Hire can offer you. UAV flight is heavily monitored in the UK. Before you can even send up your drone, you must have permissions from the CAA, landowners and more. We have all seen the stories about drone enthusiasts or reporters flying too close to populated landmarks or into restricted airspace to get their shots, but that has landed them with hefty fines because they didn’t know about the rules. Our licensed pilot Stu Watt is fully aware of all of the permissions needed before flying. We have 2 different drones to choose from including the DJI Inspire 1 and the DJI S1000+ with a Canon 5d and 24mm EF lens mounted below on a stabilised gimbal. We already have several successful shoots under our belt since launching our Drone Rental in September 2015. You can contact our bookings department on 020 7436 3060 for more information on Drone Rental or speak to Stu himself if you have more questions about the details of flying for your shoots. For now though, do check out our show reel in the player below.
